          • In an article in Chemical Engineering, Blake Simmons (Senior Manager of Sandia’s Advanced Biomanufacturing Group and JBEI’s Chief Science & Technology Officer) talks about how the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) has scaled up biomass pretreatment technologies using ionic liquids (salts in a liquid state at ambient conditions) from the bench scale to the 100 L scale using a reactor located at the Advanced Biofuels Processing and Demonstration Unit (ABPDU).

          • Researchers from the KU Leuven Department of Chemical Engineering have discovered a method to separate two rare earth elements - europium and yttrium - with UV light instead of with traditional solvents.           • A group of scientists in Iran has produced a new solid-phase extraction material incorporating a modified ionic liquid that is designed especially for one specific task: the extraction and preconcentration of lead from a variety of materials. Maryam Mohamadi, Asma Saljooqi, Tayebeh Shamspur and Ali Mostafavi from the Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman claim that this is the first time that such a designer system has been prepared for a particular metal cation.

          • The project developed a method with high extraction capacity for gold recovery, using the newest environmentally-friendly extraction reagents. In VTT experiments, it was possible to recover more than 90 percent of the metal solution dissolved from a circuit board with the help of functional ionic liquid. The method facilitates extraction of desired components from impurities.

          • The cucumber cotyledon greening bioassay for cytokinins was modified by using 95 % acetone-ethanol instead of 80 % acetone as extraction solvent. The cotyledons were extracted directly with a 2:1 (v/v) acetone-ethanol solution in dark for 24 hours, omit ting the homogenization and centrifugation operations of the previous bioassay. The modified bioassay is more convenient and especially useful in screening cytokinin-active substance from a large number of samples.
